India Pushes for Landmark Sri Lanka Link as High Commissioner Declares “Time for Wavering is Over”

India renews its push for a land link with Sri Lanka as High Commissioner Santosh Jha calls for immediate action on a bridge or tunnel across the Palk Strait, highlighting its transformative economic potential and deepening bilateral ties in trade, tourism, and investment.

India has renewed a decisive push for a fixed land connection with Sri Lanka, with Santosh Jha declaring that decades of hesitation must end, as the proposed bridge or tunnel across the Palk Strait promises to redefine the region’s economic future.

Addressing the Global Innovation and Leadership Summit in Colombo, Jha highlighted the stark contrast in proximity and connectivity between the two nations. While the sea distance between Colombo and Chennai stands at approximately 300 kilometres, the closest points — Rameswaram in India and Talaimannar — are separated by only about 30 kilometres. Despite this short distance, he noted the absence of any direct road, railway, large-scale ferry service, energy grid connection, or pipeline linking the two sides.

Describing the situation as an “anomaly,” Jha compared it to two neighbouring rooms connected only through an external corridor, despite the possibility of building a direct doorway. He stressed that discussions on establishing land connectivity across the Palk Strait have persisted for decades, with sufficient global precedents demonstrating both engineering feasibility and economic viability.

“The engineering is well understood. The economics are compelling. The benefits, wherever such bridges have been built, are unmistakable,” Jha said, asserting that continued indecision is no longer tenable. He emphasised that a fixed link between India and Sri Lanka would fundamentally transform the region’s economic geography, positioning Sri Lanka as a strategic hub in a manner that isolated infrastructure upgrades such as ports or airports cannot achieve alone.

The High Commissioner also underlined the depth of economic ties between the two countries. India remains Sri Lanka’s largest trading partner and the leading source of tourists, a trend that has persisted despite disruptions such as natural calamities like Ditwah and geopolitical tensions in West Asia. He further noted that India is among the top contributors of foreign direct investment into Sri Lanka, with Indian investments — including those routed through third countries — accounting for over 50 percent of total inflows in the past year.

Indian companies, he added, have established a strong presence across key sectors including telecommunications, energy, digitisation, financial services, transport, and infrastructure, reinforcing the strategic and economic interdependence between the two nations.

Jha concluded that the proposed land link is not merely an infrastructure project but a transformative opportunity capable of reshaping connectivity, trade, and regional integration, marking a decisive moment in India-Sri Lanka relations.
